John Havens Thornton

USA, 1933 - 2021

John Havens Thornton (1933-2021) was a distinguished American artist whose meticulous style bridged Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Born in Mexico City to American parents, Thornton studied at Princeton University under William C. Seitz, later refining his craft at the Arts Student League and the National Academy of Design. Renowned for precise geometric forms, rich color harmonies, and explorations of spatial perspective, Thornton exhibited at prominent institutions, including the Whitney Museum’s Annual in 1967. Solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Rose Art Museum further solidified his legacy. Thornton's works reside in notable collections such as the Addison Gallery of American Art and the Rose Art Museum.
