About Lois Dodd (1927)

Lois Dodd (b. 1927) is a prominent American painter revered for her direct, observational style capturing everyday scenes. Educated at Cooper Union, Dodd became integral to New York’s postwar art community, co-founding the influential Tanager Gallery in 1952. Her paintings distill landscapes, city views, and interiors into simplified forms infused with a distinctive sensitivity to light. Major retrospectives, notably "Catching the Light" at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (2012), have highlighted her enduring contribution. Her works are collected by institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery.
