About the Artist

Sonia Gechtoff (1926-2018) was a significant American Abstract Expressionist whose energetic, palette-knife-driven paintings marked her as a standout figure within the San Francisco Bay Area scene. Gechtoff, celebrated in exhibitions such as "Younger American Painters" at the Guggenheim (1954), bridged West Coast dynamism with New York’s abstract tradition. Her works are housed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and National Academy of Design.
